SAP Implementation

Renvric implements SAP S/4HANA and its surrounding BTP and Fiori layers in stages with written exit criteria: design and fit-gap, build, integration, data migration, testing, cut-over and hypercare. The plan is built around the things that usually cause overruns, namely data quality, custom code, interfaces and business availability.

01

Choosing the implementation route

Three routes are common. A new implementation, often called greenfield, redesigns processes on a fresh system and migrates selected data. A system conversion, sometimes called brownfield, moves an existing system forward and keeps its history and much of its configuration. A selective approach moves chosen entities or data into a new landscape. Each trades cleaner design against continuity, and the choice should come out of assessment, not habit.

Implementation phases

Discover and prepare

Confirm scope, governance, environments, team roles and the data and code that will be in play. Agree acceptance criteria before design begins.

Design and fit-gap

Walk each process through standard behaviour, record gaps and decide whether to adopt, configure, extend on BTP or develop in ABAP.

Build and integrate

Configure in iterations, develop approved extensions and Fiori applications, and build interfaces with error handling and monitoring.

Migrate and test

Rehearse data loads repeatedly, then run unit, integration, user acceptance and regression testing with business-owned scripts.

Cut over and hypercare

Rehearse the cut-over plan, decide go or no-go against agreed criteria, then stay close to users while the first month-end and period-close cycles run.

03

Roles on both sides

  • On the client side: an executive sponsor, process owners per area, data owners, key users who test, and an IT lead who controls environments and access.
  • On the Renvric side: a delivery lead, functional consultants by module, ABAP and Fiori developers, integration and data migration specialists, and Basis support.
  • Shared: a design authority that approves any departure from standard, and a change board that decides what enters scope after baseline.
  • Often overlooked: an owner for training, business communications and the cut-over weekend roster.

04

Data migration and integration

Data migration is a workstream, not a task. It starts with profiling source data, deciding what is in scope, mapping fields, and then loading repeatedly into test systems using the vendor's migration tooling or staging tables, reconciling each run with reports that finance can check. Integration follows the same discipline: each interface has an owner, a defined message contract, retry and error handling, and a test with realistic volumes.

05

Why SAP implementations overrun

Overruns rarely come from technology. They come from late discovery of dirty data, uncontrolled custom development, process owners who cannot attend design sessions, interfaces scoped late and regression testing squeezed at the end. Renvric manages these by running migration rehearsals early, treating each custom object as a decision with an owner, and holding a change board that makes the cost of new scope visible before it is accepted.

06

Acceptance, go-live and support

  • Entry and exit criteria for every phase, written before the phase starts.
  • Test coverage reported by business process, with defect severity definitions agreed in advance.
  • A go or no-go checklist covering data reconciliation, open defects, user readiness and a rollback or contingency path.
  • A hypercare period with a daily triage rhythm and a clear route into ongoing support.
  • Handover of documentation, configuration decisions and custom code inventory.

Common questions

Typical phases are discover and prepare, design and fit-gap, build and integrate, migrate and test, then cut-over and hypercare. Each has entry and exit criteria agreed in writing. Renvric adapts the sequence to the route chosen, so a system conversion weights code remediation and testing more heavily than a new implementation does.

Both are managed as workstreams with owners. Migration involves profiling, mapping, repeated rehearsal loads and reconciliation reports that business users sign off. Integration gives each interface a contract, error handling, monitoring and volume testing. Neither is left until the final weeks of the schedule.

The usual causes are poor data quality found late, uncontrolled custom development, unavailable process owners, late interface scoping and compressed testing. Renvric reduces the risk with early migration rehearsals, a design authority that approves every departure from standard, and a change board that shows the effect of new scope.

Testing runs in layers: unit, integration, user acceptance and regression, using scripts owned by the business. Go-live follows rehearsed cut-over plans and a go or no-go review against agreed criteria, including data reconciliation and a contingency path if something fails.

A hypercare period follows, with daily triage and close attention to period-close and other peak processes. After that, ongoing support can be provided under a separate agreement covering incidents, enhancements and update testing, with response arrangements defined in the contract.

01

Most implementations are best set up as a project-based engagement, with a written scope and acceptance criteria, though a dedicated team suits long programmes with shifting priorities. For orientation, see SAP services and the wider enterprise platform services.
