Software Architecture Consulting

Software architecture consulting helps you choose the shape of a system before the cost of changing it becomes severe. Renvric reviews or designs architecture against your real constraints, records the reasoning behind each decision, and leaves your team with something they can build against and defend.

01

Why architecture decisions deserve attention

Architecture is the set of decisions that are expensive to reverse: how the system is divided, where data lives, how components communicate, and which platforms you depend on. Poor choices rarely fail loudly; they show up as slow delivery, rising cloud bills, fragile releases and unwelcome surprises at scale.

Consulting is most valuable at moments of change: a new product, a growth step, an acquisition, or an inherited system nobody understands.

02

Questions an architecture engagement answers

  • Should this be a modular monolith or a set of services, and what would justify the extra operational cost of services?
  • Which parts need strong consistency and which can tolerate eventual consistency?
  • How will the system scale, and where is the first bottleneck likely to be?
  • What are our security boundaries, and how are identity and secrets handled?
  • Which build-versus-buy choices carry long-term lock-in?
  • How do we migrate from what we have without stopping the business?

Qualities that pull in different directions

01

Performance versus cost

Caching, replication and over-provisioning improve speed but add expense and complexity.

02

Flexibility versus simplicity

Generic designs anticipate change that may never come; simple ones are quicker to build and easier to change when needs become clear.

03

Consistency versus availability

Distributed data forces choices about what happens during failure.

04

Team autonomy versus coherence

Independent services help teams move alone, but need shared standards for observability, security and APIs.

04

Artefacts you receive

  • Context and constraints summary: goals, scale, regulatory and team limits.
  • Architecture diagrams at several levels of detail, such as context, container and component views.
  • Architecture decision records stating options considered, the choice and the reasons.
  • Quality-attribute scenarios with measurable targets for performance, availability and security.
  • A risk register and a staged roadmap for reaching the target design.
05

Scenario: a growing monolith

Consider a company whose single application now takes forty minutes to deploy and where a change to invoicing breaks reporting. The reflex is to split it into microservices. An architecture review might instead recommend enforcing module boundaries inside the monolith, extracting only the one component with distinct scaling needs, and introducing contract tests. That produces most of the benefit with a fraction of the operational burden, and the decision record explains why.

How Renvric approaches an engagement

Understand

Interview stakeholders and engineers, read the code and runbooks, and map dependencies and data flows.

Frame the drivers

Rank what matters: growth, cost, compliance, time to market, resilience.

Explore options

Develop two or three viable architectures and test each against the drivers.

Validate

Prototype the riskiest assumption and review the design with your engineers.

Document and hand over

Record decisions, present them to leadership and support the first delivery steps.

07

Reviewing an existing system

A review looks at structure, coupling, test coverage, deployment, data model and operational behaviour, and reports where the architecture helps or hinders the roadmap. It is honest about what to leave alone. Rewriting is rarely the first answer; incremental modernisation, such as strangling a legacy component behind a stable interface, is often safer.

Common questions

Stakeholder and code review, definition of goals and constraints, option analysis, target architecture diagrams, decision records, quality targets, risk register, migration roadmap and, where useful, prototypes of risky assumptions. Reviews of existing systems add a findings report with recommendations.

CTOs and engineering leaders planning a new platform, scaling a product, inheriting an unfamiliar system, preparing for due diligence or weighing a move to the cloud or to services. It also helps when the team disagrees and needs a documented, reasoned recommendation.

A focused review or design usually takes a limited number of weeks, depending on system size and access to people and code. Renvric agrees the duration and outputs in writing after an introductory conversation. Advisory support during delivery can continue afterwards.

System size and age, number of major decisions, quality of existing documentation, the need for prototypes, number of stakeholders to interview and the depth of migration planning. Access to code and engineers early in the engagement shortens it.

Decisions are tied to stated drivers and recorded with alternatives, risky assumptions are tested through prototypes, designs are reviewed with your engineers, and outputs are written so someone outside the room can understand them. Residual risks are listed, not hidden.

Engagements are normally project-based with a defined output, and can continue as advisory support during delivery. Cost depends on system size, number of decisions to be made and how much prototyping is needed.
