Business Intelligence

Renvric builds business intelligence that people actually use: agreed metric definitions, trustworthy data models, governed access and reports shaped around real decisions, so finance, sales and operations stop arguing about whose number is right and start acting on it. Adoption is measured, not assumed.

01

Why dashboards get ignored

Most failed BI programmes do not fail on the charting tool. They fail because two departments define active customer differently, a nightly refresh breaks silently, or a report answers a question nobody asked. Renvric begins with decisions and definitions, and picks tooling afterwards.

If a figure cannot be traced from the dashboard back to a source system, it will not survive its first challenge in a leadership meeting.

Components of a working BI environment

01

Metric dictionary

One written definition per measure, with an owner, a formula and the source it comes from.

02

Semantic layer

A governed model of facts and dimensions that tools query, so definitions live in one place.

03

Reporting layer

Dashboards, scheduled reports and exports shaped around specific roles and decisions.

04

Access model

Row- and column-level rules so a regional manager sees their region and nothing more.

05

Refresh and monitoring

Scheduled loads with freshness indicators and alerts when a source misbehaves.

03

How an engagement runs

  • Interview the people who make the decisions and list the ten or so questions they ask most often.
  • Audit the sources: where each answer lives, how clean it is, and who maintains it.
  • Agree definitions and sign them off with the owning department.
  • Build the model and the first set of reports for one function, then review use before widening.
  • Train report authors and set up a request route for new measures.

04

Self-service and control, in balance

Unrestricted self-service produces a hundred slightly different revenue charts. Heavy central control produces a queue. A workable middle is a certified set of datasets maintained centrally, with analysts free to build on top and a visible label showing which reports are certified.

The tool choice, whether Power BI, Tableau, Looker, Metabase or another, matters less than whether your team can maintain it and whether it connects cleanly to your warehouse.

05

Typical pitfalls

  • Building reports directly on operational databases, which slows both.
  • Currency, time-zone and calendar inconsistencies across regions.
  • Hidden manual adjustments in spreadsheets that never reach the model.
  • No agreed owner when a source system changes a field.
06

A clinic reporting example

A multi-site clinic group wants weekly utilisation and cancellation views. The discovery step might find that three sites record appointment status differently. Mapping those statuses once in the model, and publishing the mapping, would be worth more than any additional chart.

Common questions

Metric definitions, source assessment, a data model, dashboards and reports for agreed roles, access rules, refresh scheduling, documentation and user training. Whether a warehouse build is needed depends on the sources, and it is scoped as a separate item where required.

Leadership and operations teams that rely on spreadsheets, receive conflicting figures, or want regular insight without waiting for analysts. It suits organisations with at least a few systems of record that already hold useful data. A pilot group usually reviews the first release before wider rollout.

A first set of reports for one function can often be live within weeks once definitions are agreed; broader coverage takes longer. The slowest steps are usually decisions on definitions and access to clean source data, so Renvric plans those early.

Number and quality of sources, number of metrics and audiences, refresh frequency, security rules, tool licensing and training needs. Cleaning poor source data is often the largest variable, and it is surfaced during the first discovery weeks. Refresh frequency can also move running cost.

By reconciling dashboard figures to source totals before release, documenting each metric, testing access rules with real user roles, and monitoring refresh jobs. Reports are launched to a pilot group first so errors are caught before wide rollout. Users are trained before anything goes live.
