Natural Language Processing

Natural language processing turns text and speech into something software can act on: classified emails, extracted contract terms, searchable knowledge, summarised calls. Renvric builds NLP solutions with careful evaluation, choosing between rules, classical models and large language models according to accuracy, cost, privacy and risk.

01

What NLP can do for a business

Most useful applications fall into a handful of tasks. Classification sorts text into categories. Extraction pulls out entities, dates, amounts and clauses. Search and retrieval finds relevant passages by meaning. Summarisation condenses long material. Generation drafts replies or reports. Each has different failure modes, so the task is defined before the technology is chosen.

Renvric scopes the task, the language mix, the tolerance for errors and the human review step before building anything.

02

Typical applications

  • Routing inbound emails or tickets by topic, urgency and customer, with a person handling uncertain cases.
  • Extracting parties, dates, amounts and obligations from contracts or invoices for review.
  • Semantic search across policies, manuals and past cases, returning source passages.
  • Summarising calls or meetings into notes with action items linked to the transcript.
  • Monitoring feedback, reviews or survey text for emerging themes.
  • Redacting personal information from documents before sharing or analysis.

Choosing the method

01

Rules and patterns

Fast, transparent and cheap for well-formed text such as reference numbers; brittle with varied language.

02

Classical machine learning

Good for classification with labelled examples; efficient to run and easy to evaluate.

03

Fine-tuned transformer models

Strong for extraction and classification when enough labelled data exists and accuracy matters.

04

Large language models

Flexible for summarising and drafting with little training data; they need grounding, guardrails and cost control.

05

Hybrid pipelines

Rules for the obvious, models for the ambiguous, and a person for the rest.

04

Grounding and retrieval for language models

When a language model answers questions about your documents, the answer should come from those documents rather than from the model's general memory. A retrieval-augmented design splits content into passages, indexes them, retrieves the most relevant ones for each question and instructs the model to answer only from them, citing the source. Permissions must follow the content, so a user cannot retrieve text they could not open directly. Renvric evaluates retrieval and answers separately, because poor retrieval is the commonest cause of poor answers.

05

Evaluation you can trust

  • A labelled test set built with your subject experts, covering common and awkward cases.
  • Task-appropriate metrics, such as precision and recall for extraction, with error review by category.
  • Checks across languages, dialects and document types actually in use.
  • For generated text, rubrics scored by people, plus automated checks for unsupported claims.
  • Regression tests that run when prompts, models or data change.
  • Monitoring of live outputs with a sample reviewed by humans on a schedule.
06

Data protection and risk

Text often contains personal or commercially sensitive information. Decisions are needed on where data is processed, whether a third-party model service may see it, how long prompts and outputs are stored and who can read logs. Options include private deployments, redaction before processing and contractual limits on provider data use. Consider a legal team summarising contracts: the system should show the clause behind each summary and make unreliable outputs obvious, because a confident but wrong summary is worse than none.

Working method

01

Define

Pick one task, one document set and one success measure.

02

Sample

Gather representative texts and have experts label a set.

03

Prototype

Compare two or three methods on the same test set.

04

Integrate

Place the best method in the workflow with a review step and logging.

05

Operate

Monitor quality and cost, and refresh the test set as language changes.

Common questions

Typically task definition, data sampling and labelling support, method comparison, model or pipeline development, retrieval design where needed, evaluation, integration with the workflow, privacy controls, monitoring and documentation. The scope specifies tasks, languages and document types.

It suits organisations with large volumes of text such as emails, contracts, tickets, reports or call transcripts, where reading and sorting consumes skilled time. It is less suited to tasks where every error is costly and no human review is feasible.

A narrow proof of value can often be planned in weeks, but duration depends on data availability, labelling effort, languages, integrations and review needs. Renvric sets stages with decision points after measured results on your own documents.

Drivers include document volume and variety, number of languages, labelling effort, model choice and serving cost, retrieval infrastructure, privacy requirements such as private hosting, integration depth and the monitoring you require. Language model usage charges can be significant at scale.

By building expert-labelled test sets, comparing methods fairly, requiring citations for generated answers, keeping a human review step for uncertain cases, applying permission-aware retrieval, controlling data handling with providers, and monitoring outputs after launch.

Next step

What to prepare before an NLP workshop

01

Collect sample documents or messages, describe the decision they feed, note the languages, and identify who can judge correctness. A workshop can then agree a narrow first task and the test set that will decide whether to proceed.
