Technology Audit

A technology audit gives leadership an independent, evidence-based view of what you run, how healthy it is and what it will cost to keep or change. Renvric examines code, infrastructure, delivery practice and security posture, then ranks findings by business consequence so decisions can be made calmly.

01

When an audit is the right first move

An audit fits moments when someone must make a decision about a system they do not fully understand: buying a company, inheriting software from a supplier, planning a migration, or answering a board question about risk. It replaces opinion and anecdote with a documented assessment.

It is not a rewrite proposal. Many audits conclude that most of a system should stay, with a short list of targeted repairs.

Areas an audit can examine

01

Architecture and code

Structure, coupling, duplication, test coverage, dependency age and how hard changes are in practice.

02

Infrastructure and operations

Hosting, environments, deployment, monitoring, backup and recovery, and cost against usage.

03

Security posture

Access control, secrets, patching, dependency vulnerabilities, logging and handling of personal data.

04

Data

Models, quality, lineage, retention and how reports are produced.

05

Delivery practice

Branching, review, release frequency, incident handling and documentation.

06

People and knowledge

Concentration of knowledge, skills gaps and reliance on individuals or suppliers.

03

What you receive

  • An executive summary stating overall condition in plain language.
  • A findings register where each item has evidence, business impact, likelihood and a recommended action.
  • Technical debt grouped by effect: what slows delivery, what raises risk, what raises cost.
  • A prioritised remediation plan with effort ranges and sequencing.
  • A list of quick wins that reduce risk without large investment.
  • Questions to put to current suppliers, based on what the audit found.

04

Scenario: due diligence

Consider an investor evaluating a software company before purchase. The audit asks whether the product depends on an unsupported framework, whether one engineer holds the deployment knowledge, whether customer data is segregated, and whether stated uptime is supported by monitoring records. Findings feed negotiation: some become price adjustments, others a hundred-day plan. A clear scope and independence matter, as the audit should not be shaped by whoever is selling.

How Renvric conducts an audit

01

Agree scope and access

Define questions, systems, read-only access and confidentiality terms.

02

Collect evidence

Review documents, repositories, configurations and metrics, and interview engineers and operators.

03

Analyse

Use tooling for dependencies, static analysis and configuration, plus manual review of critical areas.

04

Rate findings

Score each by impact and likelihood using criteria shared with you in advance.

05

Present and refine

Walk through draft findings with your team to correct errors before the final report.

06

Principles of a fair audit

  • Findings cite evidence, such as a file, a setting or a log, rather than impression.
  • Context is respected: a pragmatic shortcut taken for a deadline is described as such.
  • Strengths are recorded as carefully as weaknesses.
  • Unknowns are listed explicitly where access or time prevented a conclusion.
  • Recommendations state cost and trade-offs, not only ideals.
07

Limits and independence

An audit samples; it cannot find every defect or prove the absence of vulnerabilities. Renvric states what was reviewed and what was not. If Renvric might also be asked to carry out remediation, that interest is declared, and the report is written so that any supplier could act on it. Security-specific penetration testing is a separate service.

Common questions

Scoped review of architecture, code quality, infrastructure, security posture, data practices and delivery process, interviews with your team, a findings register with evidence and ratings, an executive summary and a prioritised remediation plan with effort ranges. Penetration testing is separate.

Boards, investors and executives needing an independent view; CTOs inheriting systems; companies planning migration, merger or major investment; and organisations whose supplier relationship has lost transparency. It suits any situation where decisions depend on understanding the real state of technology.

Length depends on how many systems are in scope and how quickly access and people are available. Audits are time-boxed with a draft review before the final report. Renvric proposes timings once scope is understood and does not promise dates beforehand.

Number of systems and repositories, size of the codebase, breadth of areas examined, infrastructure complexity, availability of documentation and engineers, and whether the report must support external parties such as investors. Clear read-only access early on avoids delays that add cost.

Through a written scope, shared rating criteria, evidence behind every finding, draft review with your team, explicit listing of what was not examined and confidentiality of all material. Any potential conflict regarding follow-on work is declared up front.

Next step

Cost and how to begin

01

Cost depends on the number of systems, code volume, access, depth of review and the audience for the report. Preparing a system list, repository access and a named contact speeds the work.
